Plastic is all around us. There wouldn’t be a single day where you haven’t come across or used something made of plastic. It’s economical, easy to store in, sturdy and very convenient for packaging too! Now isn’t that wonderful@#$??!!
Well, if you are still living in this bubble, let's break it for you. Our very own plastic is causing the maximum danger to human and animal life. Much has been written and spoken in this area.
As individuals are we doing something about it? Is it affecting me? Everyone is still using it, so how does it matter if we I it too? (NO crime right!). Is it worth so much of my time? Environmental products cost so much more! The government and big companies don't care so why should I? I am sure most, if not all would have or are dealing with these questions mentally.
Every minute, every single day, equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters our ocean. Just last year we had 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic goods that were produced. According to the Waste management department of Dubai Municipality, the country's residents used a whopping 13 billion plastic bags that year. Figures show that residents use 450 plastic water bottles on an average per year. Which is the highest in bottle water consumption around the world! Therefore it is in our hands now to find alternatives to plastic before it’s too late.
Plastic is harmful because it is ‘Non-Biodegradable’. When thrown on land it makes the soil less fertile. If animals eat plastic, it gets stuck in their stomach and makes them sick. The bacteria in their stomach cannot break the plastic up into smaller pieces. When thrown in water it chokes our ponds, rivers and oceans and harms sea life. When plastic is burned in the open air, it releases large amount of toxins, which pollutes the air. As the population increases, it is going to be very difficult to find places to dump garbage.
Plastic sits where it is , doesn’t go anywhere, so the plastic that you have used as a baby is still sitting somewhere.
